Many African communities are migrating to greener pastures because climate change has disrupted their traditional means of livelihood of fishing and agriculture. The onus lies on agriculture scientists to develop crop varieties that are weather resistant & give a bumper crop.

BSc Agriculture

BSc Horticulture

Both these courses are of 4 years which Science or Agriculture students can pursue after class 12th. The demand for agriculture courses is on the rise because the Govt wants to double farmer’s income by adopting modern farming techniques.

Many universities shortlist candidates through tests like CUET, while others admit based on the marks in the qualifying examination.

Whichever is the case, the choice for BSc Agriculture courses is on the rise because ensuring food security is vital for every country?

In fact, countries like India are working to develop crop varieties that can sustain climate fluctuations & still give a robust harvest. The world needs agriculture scientists because they develop crop varieties that are sustainable and give a good yield.

The plethora of central & state agriculture universities are a testimony that the Govt. wants to ensure food security for all.

Further, Krishi Vighyan Kendra (KVKs) are the laboratories where scientists develop new varieties & techniques that help farmers get a bumper harvest despite climate changes.

Eligibility for Bachelor Of Science (BSc) agriculture

Candidates should have passed 10+2 examination with agriculture or science (PCM/PCB/PCMB/Biotechnology) with min 55% marks.

This clarifies that both PCM & PCB students are eligible for agriculture courses, provided they have a passion for developing new crop varieties.

With the focus on bumper harvest, scientists have not paid attention to the crop germplam that is used to develop adaptable varieties (AV) of the wheat crop.

Now agriculture scientists are working overtime to develop AV that can sustain heat stress and give a bumper harvest.

Research has shown that when temperatures >30 C the wheat plant does not bear enough wheat grains, further lowering the productivity of this vital staple crop. Heat & drought stress are the 2 main inhibitors that lower wheat production.
