The best way to become a sports teacher is to pursue a bachelor’s degree in physical education (B.P.Ed).

The BPEd course is the most desired qualification for becoming a sports teacher.

B.P.Ed Eligibility

Bachelor’s degree with physical education as an elective subject with 50% marks;

Or a Bachelor’s degree with physical education as an elective subject with 45% marks and participation in National/State/Inter University competitions in sports or games or athletics recognized by the Association of the 16 Indian Universities or the Indian Olympic Association;

Or a Bachelor’s degree with 45% marks and having taken part in National/State/Inter University sports or games or athletics.

For deputed in-service candidates (i.e. trained physical education teachers/coaches)–Graduation with 45% marks and at least 3 years of teaching experience. A relaxation of 5% marks in eligibility qualification shall be provided to candidates of SC/ST/OBC categories. Admission to B.P.Ed. will be based on the physical fitness test and academic weightages.

The DSSSB (Delhi Subordinate Services Selection Board) conducts the teacher recruitment exam for short-listing candidates for government schools in Delhi.

  1. Bachelor of Physical Education Degree (B.P. E.d)
  2. B.Sc in Health and Physical Education, and a degree in sports with a minimum of 55% marks, as prescribed by NCTC (Recognition Norms and Procedures, 2009).
  3. B.P.E or equivalent course with at least 50% marks, from a Teacher Organization Recognized Institute.

Sports Teacher Salary

As with any other qualification, the PE teacher’s salary varies with experience, institution and the location.

Reputed schools in metros pay around 3-8 LPA, while schools in Tier 2 & 3 cities pay around 3-5 LPA.

Many international schools hire sports coaches and pay them well.

This is because when students win awards in national/international sporting events, it leads to schools’ brand development, leading to more admissions.

They have to accompany the college team for various national and international sporting events so that parents are confident in sending their wards to such events.

Sports teachers should instil discipline and a desire for routine physical activity so that children value the significance of a healthy life.

Surveys show that students who are active during school are more likely to stay active later in life, contributing to better overall health.
