The scope of electrical engineering is promising because of the significant growth in electric vehicle sales in India. In 2022, the sales reached 4.19 lakh units, a substantial increase from the 1.19 lakh units sold in 2020. Further, studies forecast a sale of 39.21 million EV units by the year 2021. The Indian EV market, worth US$2 billion in 2023, is projected to reach US$7.09 billion by 2025. Industry estimates suggest that the domestic EV market will hit 10 million annual sales by 2030. These figures suggest an enormous demand for skilled electrical engineers who can innovate to produce cost effective vehicles that are a blessing for the environment & society. According to a report by Bain &Co., by 2030, electric two-wheelers are expected to make up around 40 to 45 percent of all electric vehicles (EVs) sold in India. Electric passenger vehicles are projected to represent approximately 15 to 20 percent. This shows that the demand for electrical engineers will rise in the coming era. A report by Niti Aayog highlights the Indian government’s targets for electric vehicle (EV) adoption. By that year, they aim for 40 percent of buses, 30 percent of private cars, 70 percent of commercial vehicles, and 80 percent of two-wheelers to be EVs. These figures present a glory picture for electrical engineers who will design, develop & execute the best & most cost effective EV in the country with a potential for export. A huge growth market As per India Briefing, the Economic Survey of India 2023 predicted a strong 49 percent compound annual growth rate (CAGR) in India’s domestic electric vehicle market from 2022 to 2030, anticipating 10 million annual sales by 2030. Projections suggest that the EV industry is poised to create around 50 million direct and indirect job opportunities in the next seven years. These figures should excite electrical engineers about limitless opportunities in electrical engineering. Scope of Electrical Engineering in India India wants to become a leading manufacturing hub for the EV through a series of incentives favoring local EV manufacturing. Introduced in 2021 with a budget of US$2.1 billion spanning seven years (including a two-year gestation period), this PLI Scheme seeks to boost India’s manufacturing capabilities for (Advanced Chemistry Cell) ACC production. They will distribute Incentives over five years based on the sales of domestically manufactured batteries. At present, they have selected three companies, each with a manufacturing capacity of 30 GWh, and the launch of the scheme’s second phase is imminent. Such schemes require innovators who can innovate and set up manufacturing hubs for the local production of EV batteries. India is actively harnessing solar power to fulfill its compounding energy needs because solar energy is renewable and environment friendly. It’s the electrical engineers who design solar panels, its photovoltaic cells that ensure they absorb maximum sun energy for producing electricity. These electrical engineers design inverters that convert solar power’s DC current to AC for the various equipment. Further, they conduct R & D to improve efficiency of solar energy for optimal results. Currently India ranks fourth globally in terms of solar power capacity. Over the past five years, the country has undergone a significant shift in its solar installed capacity, soaring from 21,651 MW to 70,096 MW by 2023. Another crucial effort that underscores India’s dedication to solar energy is the Solar Park Scheme, aimed at setting up 50 Solar Parks each with a capacity of 500 MW or more, totaling approximately 38 GW by 2025-26. These developments signify there is a tremendous scope of electrical engineering because they are the resource person who will foster this change. Solar power a promising sector In the Union Budget of 2023-24, the Government allocated INR 7,327 Cr for the solar power sector, covering grid, off-grid, and PM-KUSUM projects, reflecting a 48% surge compared to the previous year. India’s solar power sector presents a brilliant opportunity with an estimated capacity of 7,48,990 MW. This market not only holds the potential for job creation and fostering innovation, but is also crucial for India’s economic growth and energy transition. Hence, electrical engineers have a plethora of opportunities to take advantage of because India is a formidable force in harnessing solar energy. Scope of electrical engineering in future The future of electrical engineering is promising because the US Bureau of Labor projects that employment of electrical and electronics engineers will grow by 7% by 2030. Likewise, the world is making sincere efforts to adopt renewable energy sources like wind, solar, hydroelectric, etc. These initiatives require skilled electrical engineers who can design, execute & implement sustainability projects that overcome humanity’s constant energy needs. In wind energy engineering, electrical design plays a crucial role in ensuring the efficient conversion of wind kinetic energy into electricity. This process entails detailed planning, development, and optimization of electrical systems within wind turbines and wind farms. They harness the kinetic energy of moving air to generate electricity using wind. In modern wind turbines, the wind turns the rotor blades, converting kinetic energy into rotational energy. This rotational energy is then transmitted through a shaft to power the generator, effectively producing electrical energy. A growing number of countries are promoting renewable electricity generation sources like solar & wind, which have tremendous growth potential. Hence, the scope of electrical engineering is bright because electrical engineers will design & execute these renewable energy projects. Scope of electrical engineering in government sector The Government appoints electrical engineers in various PSUs and state run power distribution companies that supply electricity to cities & villages. Entities like NTPC, NHPC, BHEL, PGCIL & various state electricity boards hire electrical engineers for R & D, upkeep & for efficient distribution of power. The Rural Electrification Corporation (REC) hires electrical engineers because they are experts in their field. REC provides loan to state, Centre and Private Companies for creation of power infrastructure assets in the country. Apart from this, metro rail corporations, MRTS & other RRTS readily hire electrical engineers because they use electric power to cover distances. India’s ambitious bullet trains & other fast transport systems use electrical energy, hence electrical engineers will always be in demand. The day is not far behind when solar powered transport system will be a reality as many countries are already testing solar powered cars. Hence, the scope of electrical engineering is shining because it’s a core branch with application across different sectors.
